Is Your Business Network Ready for Today’s Dynamic Market?

  • The important thing to remember about the challenges facing business networks is they are compounding. The term Internet of Things (IoT) is often used to describe the every-increasing connectivity of inanimate objects, and there is often a lot of excitement around the potential impacts. What is often not discussed with the same excitement is the increased demand this has on business networks.Imagine your service/delivery business was tracking a fleet of vehicles across the entire country and each vehicle has a dozen connected diagnostic tools onboard. Each new endpoint in an enterprise network needs to be identified and accounted for in order to budget the required bandwidth. With ISM you take some of the guesswork out of bandwidth allocation because you can see and prepare for patterns like a holiday spike. Bandwidth capacity is a finite resource. If you can’t see it, you can’t measure it. If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.

Then there are businesses that depend on customer applications like banks and online retailers. Application Delivery Controllers (ADC) or WAN Optimisation Controllers (WOC) need a crystal clear view of capacity and the ability to perform adjustments across the network in real-time. For these types of businesses the network must simply always be on. As anyone in IT will tell you, technology does fail and even the most well-prepared businesses face challenges to uptime. This is where proactive monitoring invariably means that known issues are resolved faster. And, of course, the only threat greater than a network service interruption is the presence of malware or a malicious intrusion.

For any business IT security is important but if your business is the caretaker of customer data like credit card numbers, medical or other personal information your business simply cannot afford to settle for less than the world’s best. ISM means a certified team of IT security professionals are always monitoring your network, end-to-end, looking for threats. They also have access to the world’s largest and most up-to-date indexes of current and evolving threats as they emerge.

Security risks are often higher with a Wide Area Network (WAN) which is why most companies employ multi-layered security. Insecure web applications, targeted attacks and mobile phone browsers are easy targets and require different areas of security expertise to combat. Firewalls and multi-level security for different parts of your network can result in having multiple vendors with multiple Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

And when something goes wrong, who do you go to if you don’t even know what the problem is? True Integrated Service Management means one vendor from user-end premise to the data centre.

Your corporate Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is another example of where ISM can increase transparency and security while also increasing productivity. If your business employs Millennials you may already support a BYOD policy. Done well, BYOD should empower your employees to work and collaborate the way they want to in a safe, secure framework defined by your BYOD policy. In reality, when a business IT team tries to setup and manage a BYOD policy it often falls apart at the enforcement level and require additional resources to manage. Since many business networks are large and opaque caretakers tend to reduce risk by leaning towards the most conservative enforcement and this ends up defeating the purpose of BYOD.

A Cloud managed WLAN based on Meraki technology enhances your employees productivity by allowing them the flexibility to use the technology available – while still measuring and managing your WLAN. Imagine if you could see down to the user level to identify and enable permissions like:

With bandwidth a finite commodity, network uptime a must and security an ever-present concern the case for ISM continues to grow. As more and more businesses move towards ISM and reap the increased productivity – with more capital freed up to innovate on customer service – the question has changed from if your company will make the move to when.
